For this particular skill, I traveled over 2,300 miles to train with someone who harvests, processes, and weaves Agave fiber cordage the way her people have done it for countless years. My destination was an Indigenous Community of Paipai Indians, located in the Santa Catarina region of Baja California, Mexico. There, I met and trained with Daria Mariscal. This skill, like many others unique to Northern Mexico and the Southwest United States, was passed down to Daria through many generations of her Paipai ancestors, who depended on these skills to survive in Mexico’s unforgiving high desert environment.
In this tutorial you’ll learn how to harvest and process Agave leaves to make an incredible survival or craft cordage. Truly one of the coolest skills I’ve ever learned.
