The Lifeline When Everything Else Fails: Baofeng Radios for Survival Communication
THE END-TIMES SERIES: In this blog series I’ll be teaching a variety of worse-case-scenario survival and preparedness skills. I thought long and hard about the skills and resources I would share. I didn’t want to include “the usual” survival topics you hear about all the time. So many of those are reserved for people with lots of land, lots of money, lots of time, and lots of experience. I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t have all of those things. My focus on this series is to highlight skills and resources that are are achievable to any person, regardless of budget, location, or skill level. And, I wanted to present skills that can actually make a HUGE difference. Skills that have a BIG BANG for your BUCK! I hope you enjoy!
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Baofeng Radio requires a HAM OPERATORS license to transmit on ANY CHANNEL. But you can use this radio in a life-threatening emergency when no other option is available. You can RECEIVE on this radio without a license. Even though a license is required I think this radio provides someone the most options possible in a grid-down or otherwise horrible situation and that is why I recommend it.
However, I do list a radio option below that is a GMRS Radio. This radio still requires a GMRS License from the FCC but that license does not require an exam. You just complete a form and it’s good for the whole family.

2 SURVIVAL COMMUNICATION RESOURCES I RECOMMEND
The Baofeng Radio is simple, but confusing at the same time. I personally hate the manual and remember wanting to throw the radio against the wall when I first got it. The missing link was a good, layman’s guide to operation. The recommend above is a very good manual that teaches now only how to program and operate the radio but it also has a lot of other great information about communications as well. I highly recommend purchasing both when building out your household communication plan.
Understanding the Key Frequencies for Survival Communications
To make the most of your Baofeng radio for survival communication, it's essential to understand the key frequencies and radio services available. By demystifying these terms, you can make informed decisions about which frequencies to use based on your specific needs and circumstances.
MURS - Multi-Use Radio Service
MURS Frequencies: 151.820, 151.880, 151.940, 154.570, 154.600 MHz
The Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS) is a versatile set of VHF (Very High Frequency) channels designed for general-purpose, short-range communication. The key features of MURS include:
License-Free: MURS channels are available for public use without the need for an FCC license, making them an accessible choice for immediate communication. Although, if using the Baofeng Radio, you still need a HAM Radio Operator’s License.
Five Channels: MURS offers five distinct channels within the VHF spectrum, each with a different purpose. These channels are ideal for personal and small-group communication, whether it's coordinating neighborhood watch efforts or staying connected during outdoor adventures.
Short to Medium Range: While the range can vary depending on terrain and obstructions, MURS channels typically provide reliable communication within a 1-3 mile radius, making them suitable for local coordination in our 2-mile radius world.
FRS - Family Radio Service
FRS Frequencies: 462.5625 - 462.725 MHz
The Family Radio Service (FRS) is a UHF (Ultra High Frequency) radio service designed for short-range communication among family members and small groups. Key characteristics of FRS include:
License-Free: Similar to MURS, FRS channels are license-free and open to the public, making them accessible for casual users. Although, if using the Baofeng Radio, you still need a HAM Radio Operator’s License.
Twenty-Two Channels: FRS offers a total of 22 channels, providing a range of options for communication. These channels are commonly used for activities like camping, hiking, and staying in touch at amusement parks.
Short Range: FRS radios are typically limited to short-range communication within a 1-2 mile radius. This range can vary based on terrain and obstructions.
GMRS - General Mobile Radio Service
GMRS Frequencies: 462.550 - 467.725 MHz
The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a more robust UHF radio service known for its extended communication range and additional features. Key aspects of GMRS include:
License Required: Unlike MURS and FRS, GMRS requires users to obtain an FCC license, which covers your family or group. This license unlocks higher transmitting power and access to repeaters, extending the range of communication. Although, if using the Baofeng Radio, you still need a HAM Radio Operator’s License.
Fifteen Channels: GMRS offers a total of 15 channels, including shared channels with FRS. This provides flexibility in channel selection based on your specific communication needs.
Extended Range: GMRS radios can cover longer distances compared to MURS and FRS, with a range that can extend beyond 5 miles, especially when using repeaters.
BAOFENG does offer a GMRS only radio. This still requires a license from the FCC but does not require you to take an exam. This is a really great option for someone who wants a reliable communication tool without the HAM RADIO LICENSE. You can find that radio here: https://amzn.to/3rOniA2
If you just want to go the GMRS route and not mess around with the HAM RADIO EXAM, here is a great tutorial about how to get your GMRS License: https://www.ruggedradios.com/blogs/news/how-to-get-your-gmrs-license?gad=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhL6pBhDjARIsAGx8D58iGkhQeEjFJcPislbhzdoOPjMIU6bbtC_fnk87zNFPd_0gzjYl9gkaAo-oEALw_wcB
By understanding these key frequencies—MURS, FRS, and GMRS—you can choose the most suitable radio service for your situation. Whether it's short-range communication with MURS, immediate coordination with FRS, or extended coverage with GMRS, your Baofeng radio can adapt to your specific communication requirements during survival and disaster scenarios.

Baofeng as a HAM Radio
While the Baofeng radio excels at providing versatile communication options, it also offers an additional dimension of capabilities when used as a HAM radio. Understanding this licensed aspect of its functionality can open up even more communication possibilities for you in times of need.
Exploring HAM Radio
HAM radio, also known as amateur radio, is a service that allows licensed operators to communicate over a wide range of frequencies. It's a global community of radio enthusiasts who engage in various forms of communication, from local chatter to long-distance conversations and emergency communication.
The Licensed Advantage
To legally transmit on HAM radio frequencies (and any other frequencies using the Baofeng radio), you must obtain an amateur radio license issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. While this process involves passing an exam and obtaining a license, the benefits are well worth it, especially in emergency situations. Here's why:
Extended Communication Range: HAM radio operators have access to a wide range of frequencies, including those in the HF (High Frequency) and VHF/UHF (Very High Frequency/Ultra High Frequency) bands. These frequencies enable long-distance communication, potentially reaching other states or countries, even when local infrastructure is compromised.
Network of Operators: The HAM radio community is vast and interconnected, with operators worldwide. In times of crisis, this network can provide you with access to valuable information, assistance, and coordination that might not be available through other means.
Emergency Communication: HAM radio operators play a crucial role in emergency and disaster communication. They often assist local authorities, providing a reliable means of communication when traditional methods fail.
